Event Description

What would you do with a space in a 1930s market arcade in Brixton? If you have a good idea, you could be part of the largest empty shops project in the UK.

Space Makers Agency is joining forces with London & Associated Properties PLC and Lambeth Council to fill the empty shop units in Brixton Village indoor market with exciting temporary and permanent projects.

Right now, 20 units in the market are being made ready for occupation. LAP are offering people the chance to take on a unit, rent free, for up to three months.

On Tuesday 10th November, the empty shops will be open for viewing from 4.30pm and anyone interested in taking on a space is invited to come to a meeting at 6.30pm. This will be a chance to hear from the owners and from Lambeth Council, as well as existing market traders, and find out what’s involved in taking on a shop – on a temporary or permanent basis.

Space Makers is looking for your ideas for creative, community-oriented and enterprising projects to make use of a space. Projects could include new and existing businesses, as well as community groups, arts and theatre projects and other imaginative uses of space.

Hello Douglas

Our time at 132 Streatham Hill comes to an end 30th Dec. If you know of any other appropriate empty properties in the borough we could move our Lambeth Open The Gallery we would be very interested.

Hi Timothy -

I agree that "a few shops open in an otherwise empty market" isn't the way forward. We're busy working to fill the Granville Arcade with new projects, including a mixture of temporary and permanent occupants. Our aim is to develop new businesses and self-sustaining projects that can become long-term tenants - something I believe is achievable. Since we've been pretty clear about that, I'm not sure I understand your comment about "a short term distraction".

The first time I visited Granville Arcade, I was really excited by its possibilities as a space - everything from the art deco architecture to the mix of existing businesses, to the opportunity of bringing in and supporting a range of projects in a shared space. (Funnily enough, Dan Thompson from the Empty Shops Network tells me he had arrived independently at the conclusion that it was one of the most promising spaces in London for a significant empty shops project.)

So I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one! What I suspect we do agree on is that the success of this project should be judged by its long-term effects for the market and for Brixton.

Best of luck with Lambeth Open The Gallery! Let me know if there's anything Space Makers Agency or others within the network can do to help.

Sunday opening I think is key, but a few shops open in an otherwise empty market will not look very attractive.
My worry is that money is being spent on a short term distraction rather than a long term solution.
Wouldn't a busier high street be a better location for such a project?

Hi Timothy -

In the "practicalities" workshop on Tuesday, Neil (the market manager) told us that the market will be open 10 till 5 the two Sundays immediately prior to Christmas. He also said that LAP intend to introduce regular Sunday opening once the current weekend closures on the Victoria Line come to an end.

Thanks for organising the meeting. The big draw back I see with Granville Arcade, especially for art based projects, is the lack of Sunday opening.

I'd like to put forward a few ideas for using the spaces as a community cinema that would be powered by bicycles. We've been running bike powered events for a few years now and I live on Brixton Hill so it would be great to do something locally.

Hi Adeline - yes, there will be opportunity to view the empty units during or after the evening event. The workshops will run till around 8pm, then from 8 till 9 there will be further chance to view units and talk to us, the owners, the council, Dan from the Empty Shops Network and others.

Max - that's great! I've been thinking about making some audio recordings of the walk along Atlantic Road for years. Be great to get you involved in documenting the project.

Hi there,

Myself and a couple of MA Fine art students from Chelsea College of Art are hoping to pop down tomorrow. We have a few events on so fingers crossed we can make it. Looks like a great opportunity!
