What's your interest in this area?
Have been interested in spaces like this since involvement with Access Space, MATILDA and other projects in Sheffield's Cultural Industries Quarter a few years ago. Wrote about various alternative third spaces for email-zine Pick Me Up.

My interest is in drawing out the common themes and the knowledge built up by people setting up and running spaces like this - and helping build networks that enable this knowledge to be shared.
What are you working on right now?
I founded Space Makers Agency to put into practice ideas developing within the Space Makers Network. We're working on a big project at Brixton Village (aka Granville Arcade), a 1930s indoor market in south London. We're also collaborating on lots of other projects - and we're always interested in talking to new collaborators.
What help do you need?
I'm always looking for examples of successful projects. (Also, lessons learned from projects that didn't succeed!)

Keen to meet people interested in collaborating on building networks and writing (or speaking) about these spaces.
What would you be interested in helping people with?
Happy to help make connections and find ways of relating your project to others, including how to present it to funders.

Out of the Ordinary

I've just been catching up on this fantastic project, which has opened its first space in Whitechapel:

Out Of The Ordinary is a community of makers and doers, fixers, visionaries and alchemists.

We create and manage public sheds where you can make beautiful and useful things from the flotsam and jetsam of everyday life.

Our sheds are simple places, built with bit of ironmongery and a lot…

More ways to get involved at Brixton Village

When we started work at Brixton Village in November, there were twenty shops sitting empty. Since then, hundreds of people have come together to fill its avenues with new businesses, creative projects and pop-up events.

This started with the offer of three months rent-free space — but it only succeeds if the market continues to be full of life and activity into the future. There mustn’t be a moment when things empty out… Continue

UK's biggest "slack space" project - Brixton Village indoor market

*** Sign up for our Brixton Village Space Race event on 10th Nov ***

What would you do with a space in a 1930s market arcade in Brixton? If you have a good idea, you could be part of the largest empty shops project in the UK.

Space Makers Agency is joining forces with London & Associated Properties PLC and Lambeth Council to fill the empty shop units in Brixton Village… Continue

Introducing the Space Makers Agency - and its first associates

Space Makers Network came about by accident - as an offline and online forum for talking about slack space projects, co-working spaces and other collaborative uses of space. Over the past six months, it has grown more than any of us imagined. Last Monday's Empty Shops Conference in Worthing, brilliantly organised by Dan Thompson of the Empty Shops Network, demonstrated how far the national movement for the creative reuse of space has come since the start of this year.

At last month's… Continue

Thank you!

I've been navigating the huge amount of info online about Space Makers and your other projects - hugely inspiring. I am keen to get involved in some useful way.

I manage the redesign of galleries at the V&A and am looking to get involved in projects that repurpose existing spaces for community building. I'll look out for meetings/events to join..

Hi Dougald,

Thanks so much for getting back to me. Space Makers have done such an amazing job aiding the regeneration of Brixton Village and I am very interested in opening up a shop there, or in the surrounding area.

I'll pop over to speak to Rachid.

Keep up the good work with your new projects!

Steph

Hi Dougald,

I threw the idea out to twiiter early this week and got back some interest. I'm hoping to run it tuttle style where people can meet and work with little rules, unless people want something more.

At the moment - the interest shocked me - I was expecting it to take a long time to find a few people interested.

Hi

Appears to be several people looking into this. I would like to get involved with people looking into it as a public service rather than a way to get rich quick. If you hear of anyone working on it in this manner please get in touch.

Hi Dougald, nice to meet you too!

Is there anyone looking into this 'slack space' idea? Seems very sensible to me. Theatres, restaurants, conference spaces, bars, clubs, concert halls... these all seem to fit the bill.

Possibly public spaces is a good place to start, assuming they are controlled by local authorities, as I imagine their remit supporting public service could be interpreted as supportive of the slack-space idea.
